About Christian Opp

Christian Opp began his career in the electrical industry in 2012 as an apprentice electrician. After earning his journeyman license in 2016, he quickly developed a specialization in advanced systems including lighting control, fire alarm, and motor controls. His field experience spans residential, commercial, and industrial new construction, along with service work—giving him a well-rounded foundation in the trade.
In 2017, the IEC Dakotas invited Christian to teach fourth-year apprentices in evening classes. He accepted the position and began teaching night classes while continuing full-time work as a foreman electrician. In 2018, he achieved his master electrician license, and by 2019, he became the contracting master electrician for an HVAC company.
Later that year, a former instructor encouraged Christian to apply for a last-minute faculty opening at Minnesota State Community and Technical College (M State). He went on to teach full-time at the college for three years, earning academic tenure in May 2023. During his time there, Christian also began teaching continuing education courses for the IEC Dakotas and became a founding member of the North Dakota State Electrical Board’s Education Advisory Committee. In this role, he helped shape curriculum standards for apprenticeship programs, continuing education, and the state licensing exam.
Christian is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI – North Dakota Chapter). He currently serves as the Chairman of the Education Committee for the Building Industry Association of the Red River Valley. Additionally, he holds the Certified Distance Education Instructor (CDEI) credential through the International Distance Education Certification Center (IDECC).
He is a licensed master electrician in both Minnesota and North Dakota and is an approved continuing education sponsor for electricians in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota through his company, Opp Seminars LLC.
"I don't like the idea of viewing continuing education as an 'obligation' or an 'annual penance.' It's true—we all need CE hours to renew our license. However, if you're going to pay good money and spend an entire day in a class, why not learn something worthwhile?"
